Facebook ch-ch-ch-changes. I'm all for change when done thoughtfully. If Facebook stayed the same, many of us would lose interest, and FB, in turn, would lose money. However, given all I've heard recently about privacy issues, I did not immediately switch to timeline. From my understanding, the biggest complaint is that timeline will dredge up posts made years ago that may reflect negatively on us because of foolish or immoral things we have said in the past.
This brings me to the reason for blogging on this topic: be careful little fingers what you post!!! Our posts, likes, pictures, are essentially public knowledge. Everything we say and do online reflects our character and can have consequences that reach far into our future. One example we know of is that potential employers now check social media to see if there are character issues with job candidates.
Maybe it was because I was 21 when I discovered Facebook, but I have always considered my audience when posting. I am friends with family members, parents, former teachers, acquaintances, and students that I am hoping to influence in a positive way. Whatever I put in writing, I will be held accountable for. And the thing about writing is that until you hit enter/publish/post/etc., you can change your mind! It's not like words that fly out of your mouth before you think of the potential damage. I hope that any content I publish does not contradict of my faith. I never use profanity. I hope that my words are full of grace and truth. I can't live up to this standard, but I want my words to reflect what is true, noble, right, pure, lovely and admirable as Philippians 4:8 instructs. I know that compared to what God is--HOLY--I will never measure up. (And I will be the first to admit that many of my posts are meaningless nonsense. Unfortunately my sense of "humor" is amplified in the written word.) But as someone saved by grace who desperately hopes that as many as possibe of my Facebook friends wil also be saved, I want my life to reflect grace!
I don't mean that I want whatever I say to be comfortable. If you choose to follow my life in person or through social media, you may be offended...but only with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. There is no room for tolerance when it comes down to life and death. Romans 3:23--All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Romans 6:23--For the wages of sin is DEATH but the gift of God is eternal LIFE in Christ Jesus our Lord.
